Campbell Street is the entrance and gateway into Downtown Tofino. Lanarc staff worked closely with a multi-disciplinary team, District staff, and the community to develop streetscape designs from concept through implementation. This work was carried out as a series of projects and phases over more than 10 years. The updated Campbell Street now includes bike lanes, bicycle parking, expanded sidewalks, crosswalks, unique furnishings, and custom coastal features.

Several innovations set this streetscape apart from a typical highway upgrade. The street integrates playful elements: the crosswalks incorporate custom designs and reference to natural and industrial heritage; the custom furniture and seating shelters provide ‘places to perch’ and spots to rest out of the sun and rain; log sculptures invite play; and the focus on natural materials used (stone and wood) echo the landscapes of the surrounding coastline.
